New State of Mind

Subject: New Article

Lately I have been thinking a lot about my terminology of what I do as an artist. I describe myself as a folk artist because of the subject matter I paint. I call myself an outsider because I create "outside" the system of a traditional gallery system. I call myself self-taught because I taught myself how to paint mostly. I also now realize that I am a raw artist because ideas freely pop out of my mind and go straight to the paper without much thought involved mostly just an emotional response.  Since we are all grasping for labels to identify what we do as artists we freely use descriptions such as outsider and folk and raw and brut and abstract to describe our work to a curious public..The words only serve as a vehicle to connect with the public as I try to translate what I do as an artist. But are the words truly what I am or who I am as an artist? I don't know.

Since the majority of people basically buy what they enjoy, the terminology can be misused as a brand rather than an actual description of what the art actually represents. Terminology once only known by a handful of art intelligentsia has now proliferated through auction venues as a branding term for art that is crafted by ordinary people. Outsider Folk and Raw art on EBAY have now become the identifying labels to brand the art that common people make, mostly untrained, and sell from their homes on Ebay.

The artworld has not invented a definition for this exploding new sector of creative freedom. Art that once may have been put away, discarded or rejected by the traditional gallery system is now being bought with great fervor by the mass public. Perhaps now art is more accessible to the public than it once was. Collecting art was once a pastime of the sophisticated elite. Ebay has modfied the old buying system. One can buy a used dress, a pack of batterys and a piece of art on EBAY all at once. Demystifying the art buying process and turning art into another impulse purchase item has been a good thing for people who want to create art and get paid.

I am all for this new change in the art buying process that Ebay has facilitated through an auction format. I think it is good for people to be creative and very good people are learning to appreciate art and they can acutally afford it. Perhaps this new buying revolution of art on Ebay will inspire more people to find art meaningful in their lives so much so they may take painting or creating in some form as a positive outlet in their lives.  I think all people benefit from art being accessible and not locked away in a pristine white room waiting for elite people who sip white wine to buy it to go with their couches.

Real Art heals and inspires whatever it is called or termed. Real art is what you like no matter the price, how low or high. Real art is not based on hype and puffery and verbal boasting. Real art is real simple, you like how it makes you feel, you like the way it looks, you connect with the art. Real art is subjective to you. Others may not see what you do in the art but that should not sway you from purchasing what you enjoy!
